John Alexander and Peter Kaellgren join us to share their discoveries of the Weird, Wild and Wonderful: carnivores, parasites and other unusual plants in Canada.
When: Sunday March 17, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm
Where: Nepean Sportsplex, 1701 Woodroffe Ave. in Hall F (Enter through door 2 from the rear parking lot)
This month we welcome John Alexander and Peter Kaellgren to give us a talk on Weird, Wild and Wonderful: carnivores, parasites and other unusual plants in their quest to document the wild orchids of Ontario including those in the Bruce Peninsula and closer to home in the Purdon Conservation Area. The talk will be aimed at those who may wish to visit the Bruce Peninsula during spring flowering to view the many species which are endemic and protected. They will also touch on other interesting plants which can be seen at the same time. This is bound to be a very interesting talk, given by two experts who have travelled across Canada searching out and photographing native orchids in their natural habitats.
John Alexander has been photographing his surroundings since his teens. Originally from Fredericton, New Brunswick, John moved to Toronto in 1978 to study photography at Ryerson. He is passionate about the conservation of our natural environment and is currently the Chair of the Southern Ontario Orchid Society and the Canadian Orchid Congress as well as a member of our own Conservation Committee. John’s partner, Peter Kaellgren, shares his interest in bird watching and flower hunting. He served as a curator of European Decorative arts at the Royal Ontario Museum from 1972 to 2009. Earning a PHD in art history from the University of Delaware in 1987, he has lectured extensively and published many articles. A passion for preserving and appreciating nature inspires John and Peter’s search for unusual plants. (photo by Anne Barbour)
