This month join us to hear Jean Hollebone speak about The Amazing Orchids of Newfoundland.

When: Sunday September 21: 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm

Where: Nepean Sportsplex, 1701 Woodroffe Ave. in Hall F (Enter through door 2 from the rear parking lot)

Join us for our first meeting of the 2025-26 season. With regrets, the talk with Wenqing Perner on the Orchids of China will be rescheduled

However, we will not be disappointed as Jean Hollebone (AOS, OOS) will speak on The Amazing Orchids of Newfoundland. Newfoundland is a province rich in native orchids, with around three dozen species which mostly bloom in a short three-week window in late June and early July. In 2025 the Native Orchid Conference hosted a three-day seminar combined with two intensive days of field trips to view many of them in bloom. Jean will describe some of the major habitats and the abundant orchids found in them.

Jean needs no introduction for most of our members. She is a long-time member and volunteer in the Ottawa Orchid Society. She has held many positions including President and has just retired from the Board as Program Director.  She is an AOS judge based in the Toronto Judging Centre. Active in the AOS since 2012 she has served in many positions: Trustee, Secretary, Vice president, and Chair or member of many AOS Committees. Currently she has cut back to heading the Awards Committee which solicits and disperses honours to deserving AOS volunteers. With the fewer responsibilities, Jean now has time to travel and has enjoyed several trips exploring orchids in their native habitats.  Jean believes that the more we can understand about how orchids grow in nature, the better we can apply that knowledge to enhance the growing conditions and the blooms of the orchids we love to grow.   We are very grateful to Jean for stepping forward to give her talk to us in September rather than May for which it was planned.

The meeting will be a hybrid meeting. Our in-person meeting is in Hall F at Nepean Sportsplex.  We will have the usual Show Table, raffle and refreshments with a break to chat with our "Ask Me Anything" experts.  Members, please bring your plants to the show table by 1:40 pm to allow time for judging. If you are feeling unwell, please join us via Zoom.
